Bathing Your Baby : Information and Tips:

One of the most commonly asked questions is: “where should I bathe my baby?” The first thing that is typically thought of is in your bathtub. Now this can be a bit painful due to the kneeling on the hard floor, leaning uncomfortably over the side to bathe your baby, and limits your maneuverability. Using a small plastic baby bath tub or the kitchen sink with a towel in the bottom are two easier places. There are a variety of bathing tubs out there, make sure you pick one that your baby can grow into and will be safe to use.

Depending on how active your baby is will tell you how often to bathe your baby. Some parents bathe their baby every day, but if your baby is not yet crawling and getting messy yet it really isn’t necessary to do this. For pre-crawling babies bathing is only needed once or twice a week. If they get messy then a quick bath will do. Remember that a baby’s skin is very permeable and they lose heat and moisture twice as fast as we do. So, use lotion on your baby’s precious skin after each bath. When you bathe your baby it can be scary at times due to the soap and your wiggling baby, just keep a firm grip and practice.

Bath time should be one of the most fun activities for your baby. So, let’s get started:

    1. Gather all your bath supplies
    2. Fill the bath tub/sink with 2 to 3 inches of warm water (about 90 degrees F, it should not be hot)
    3. Bring your baby in and remove your baby’s clothes
    4. Slowly ease your baby into the tub/sink, while supporting your baby’s neck and head with one hand
    5. Use the baby soap in moderation due to its drying effects on the skin. Wash using either your hand or washcloth starting at the head down to the toes, from front to back. Gently wash the scalp with a wet, lathered cloth. To wash your baby’s face use a moist cotton ball. Be sure to wash between skin folds and creases. If mucus or any other died substance is in your baby’s nose or eyes, gently dab at it with a corner of a wet washcloth to loosen it up before you clean it off.
    6. Make sure to thoroughly rinse your baby off with water and a clean washcloth.
    7. Wrap your baby in a towel from head to toe and gently pat him dry.
    8. For those boys whom their foreskin separates before puberty, occasionally retracting and cleaning beneath it will be appropriate. After puberty, he should start cleaning beneath his foreskin daily, add it to his daily good hygiene, with his brushing his teeth, bathing, and grooming; (1)Gently pull the foreskin back away from the end of the penis, (2)Rinse under the foreskin with soap and water, (3)Pull the foreskin back over the penis.
