Preeclampsia is diagnosed by having high blood pressure of 140/90 or higher on two or more occasions six hours apart and proteinuria (protein in the urine) during pregnancy. It typically occurs after 20 weeks of gestation and up to 7 days after the birth of the infant. Studies have found that certain women are at greater risk for developing preeclampsia including: first time pregnancies, pregnancy under 18 years of age or over the age of 40, obesity (BMI >30), insulin dependent diabetics, pre-existing high blood pressure, multiple pregnancy, a history of preeclampsia, a family history of preeclampsia, high blood pressure, and/or diabetes.

As mentioned earlier high blood pressure of 140/90 or higher on two or more occasions six hours apart, edema (swelling), sudden weight gain, and rapid pulse. The preeclamptic mother may also complain of headaches, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, right shoulder pain, lower back pain, and anxiety. “But most of these are all the same/or similar symptoms for pregnancy”….yes they are, that is why preeclampsia can only be diagnosed by your doctor. The only real test that will prove if you have it is the proteinuria test.

The only cure for preeclampsia is the delivery of the baby, so care should be focused on management of high blood pressure and to continue to monitor for signs and symptoms for any changes. Careful monitoring can ensure their safety and prolong the pregnancy to prevent complications from a premature delivery. In some cases, the baby must be delivered immediately, regardless of fetus’s gestational age.
