As with any favored activity to do with your baby, you need to make it safe for him. Bathing carries its own hazards as well as fun. Keep safety in mind when buying bathing supplies and while bathing your baby. Here are some tips to help you keep your baby safe:
- If the water is running in the tub don’t put your baby in (the temp can change or get too deep)
- Babies need their bath water to be warm (90 degrees F)
- Make sure that the air in the bathroom is warm, once out of the water a baby can get a chill quickly in a cool bathroom
- Make your bathtub safe: place a rubber bath mat on the bottom of the tub, protect your baby’s head with a cushioned cover for the spout on the tub, and if there are sliding glass doors make sure they are made from safety glass.
- Reinforce to your baby that sitting is what they do in the bathtub not standing
- Have playtime at the beginning of the bath, and then clean. If your baby sits too long in soapy water they run the risk of irritating the skin and the urethra, if this happens it might increase the chance of a urinary tract infection.
- Make sure to keep electric appliances away from the bathtub.
- Reset your water heater to 120 degrees F. It only takes seconds for a baby to receive burns from water that is 140 degrees and up. Typically hot water heaters leave the factory at a setting of 150 degrees F.
- Teach your baby not to touch the faucet handles. Even if they cannot move them right now, they will soon and this could lead to an injury later on.
