Starting solid foods is a big step for any baby. If your baby is ready you can start solids between 4 and 6 months. Keep in mind that breast milk or formula is your baby’s best nutrition and gives him all the nourishment and calories they need, so make any cereal with these. Your baby’s digestive system is not developed enough to handle solids until he nears 5 months. Some babies develop more quickly than others and start at 4 months. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that babies should be breastfed or formula only for at least six months.

Knowing when your baby is ready is key to starting solids. He will give you easily recognizable signs when he is ready to start. Here are some cues to look for:

  1. Able to sit well with support
  2. Makes chewing motions
  3. Is at least 4 months old and double his birth weight
  4. Loses the “extrusion reflex” (stops spitting food out of his mouth)
  5. Can keep his head up and steady
  6. He acts like he is still hungry even after frequent feedings
  7. He’s curious about your food. Your baby watches you eat your food, following with his eyes from plate to your mouth.
